It appears quite deliberate that Stella McCartney is unveiling her pre-fall collection today, coinciding with the COP 28 climate change conference. Just days ago in Dubai, the designer emphasized the substantial environmental impact of the fashion industry, ranking as the world’s second-largest polluter after the oil sector.
During her discussion, McCartney highlighted the alarming statistic of 100 million animals killed annually, urging viewers to consider opting for non-leather purchases. She expressed hope that each piece of information could foster consciousness in consumer choices.
Since launching her brand in 2001, McCartney has crafted a “vegetarian company,” abstaining from fur, leather, and feathers. Continually at the forefront of material innovations, she introduces BioPuff this season—a down alternative derived from regenerative wetland bulrushes, mirroring feather properties. This lightweight, fluffy, and water-repellent material is featured in a padded rendition of her popular Falabella bag.
The collection showcases avian motifs, with party looks adorned in pleated and shredded tulle, resembling authentic plumes. A bright yellow full skirt with a high slit incorporates organza to mimic genuine feathers. Emphasizing the sanctity of animal life, McCartney uses responsibly sourced materials for 93% of the collection, such as monochrome tiger stripes on a shaggy wool coat.
Typical of pre-fall collections, McCartney includes sartorial workhorses, presenting sharp suits and slinky knit separates. The lineup combines masculine sharpness with feminine allure—a double-breasted jacket in a classic check paired with a lilac lace-edged slip dress unifying the collection’s dual narratives.
